Honestly, tough to pull off. I'm a single father to a six-year-old, if I see pigtails or double braids on a girl if they aren't done right (and I'm not sure what to outline to clarify what is and isn't) all I thing of is a kid and that isn't much of a turn-on. But this is me speaking for me so who knows. I will say that I have seen it pulled off with dignity, just not the majority.

You are confusing 'childish' (immature) with 'child-like' (with the awe and wonder of a child). They are NOT the same thing. It's a very common error, however.
Braids are a common way of arranging hair so it doesn't get into everything. There was a time that only unmarried women and young girls wore it loose.
