Why is this hair style so popular with old women?

I've personally seen a lot of old ladies rock this hair do and I've wondered why for a while. Do you think you'll have this style by the time you're old or do you think it'll a thing of the past by that time? What would be the male equivalent? Balding?

I mean short and puffy hair. I don't see very many old women around me with grown out hair.

Hair thins with age so volume makes it look "better" as you can't see if the person is balding or not. Old people can't move nor see like we do, so brushing and styling long hair is complicated for some. Also a lot of old ladies choose light blonde hair dyes because the white roots are less noticeable when they grow back. This came from my grandma, when I was little I asked why old women had similar short hairstyles

It creates volume for them. Cause as women age, their hair gets thinner. That long hair on them makes look unwell or like a ghost.
