Despite all precautions, I had them in fifth grade when I accidentally sat down in a chair that a girl had recently sat in. There was a method of "cleansing" a chair of cooties- some sort of silly saying, but after fifty years it escapes me.

Back in July I took a cross country road trip and among other things I revisited my old schools. I never thought of take pictures of the playground equipment, so this is a screen shot, but it is the exact elementary school I attended back in the 1960's:

The playground... ground zero for cooties.

If you look closely you can see there are duplicates of all of the playground equipment. The swings at front-left were for the boys while those back-right were for the girls. The bars on the right were also boys front and girls back. The large complex left-rear is much more modern that we had, but is basically the same: one slide for the boys and one for the girls. Back in those day there were not polymer mats to cushion falls... just a bit of sand on the otherwise very hard ground. Looking closely, I swear that the swings and bars are OEM from 1966!
