Be patient with her and help her to feel not judged and more comfortable with you. The more you talk to her, the more she will open up to you. It can take time. Eventually you can ask her out!

Thanks. I was thinking about telling her out of the blue, but I realised it would upset her instead. What is needed is to find ways of striking up a conversation with her. Whatever it takes and whatever topic. It could be anything but not nothing.
