I would imagine it has to be a combination of reasons and performance. If I was an elite female athlete I would want something that was comfortable yet functional. Something that kept everything compressed and free from moving around too much but also looked good on me. If I put all that work into my body I would be proud as well. We also have to keep in mind with all those behind pictures that when something is that tone and firm the materials are naturally going to slide up like that when they run so some may even account for this and put it where it's going to end up anyway.

my Uncle served in the Navy alongside my great grandfather, and i served as a security officer 2 years ago, and I dont prey on others to determine who's the "beta" or "Alpha" in the situation because everyone is different. did you know the original olympians preformed naked? obviously we do not do that now but a lot of skin coverage will cause you to over heat. Back in the early days of UFC when there were little rules you could fight in a traditonal Gi. A lot who did would lose do to becoming hot and it effecting their performance in the octagon. and while I think there is no offical rule that says you can't most of those fighters just know you preform better when your skin can breath... with that being said though. most of these track and field athletes are getting closer and closer to just wearing thongs and nipple pasties. It's a combination of multiple things, as with swimsuits, athletic wear has gone away from any level of modesty, and women are going along with showing pretty much everything without concern. Its sad, but, it's what's happening. Some may argue comfort or performance, but, you shoukd be able to be totally comfortable and wear something that's completely modest. Performance wise, you can argue one way or another. Its a subject that I don't think is going to change, if anything, the clothing may get even less modest. Some may change, others, not so much.

Who do you think designs most women's clothing: men. And most of those men want to expose whatever body part they find attractive.

I was glad when a collection of women on Olympic/pro volleyball teams objected to the booty shorts and had them redesigned. It would be OK if the men's shorts were the same, but they've never been. Even Speedo swimsuits for men cover cheeks on men.

They're cut low on the hips and tight, so men's packages are displayed, but there's no "thong" style booty cuts.

And personally, I want to see practically made wear for the sport i question, not the athlete's body parts on display. Just like I don't understand the "Swimsuit Edition," of Sports Illustrated, except as a mild "Playboy" for men.

But again, it's men in charge. Wish there was a Men in Swimsuits edition for me to look at for entertainment. Alas, no noe had taken up this torch.

But if I'm running or swimming in a competition, I don't think I'd want to show as much as some of those uniforms show. Half of it is to appear feminine to appease men, the other half is necessity. Skin tight outfits don't leave swaths of fabric to get caught on things or get in your way. Not having leggings removes the issue of having the material hold you back when flexing your legs, and women's gymnastics involve a lot of leg work. Men's outfits are also designed to show off their masculine physique, so I don't really see a problem here. We all get to admire one another equally.

I think in some cases it's just more practical. I wore a speedo on the swim team. At first I was embarrassed but if I'm seriously swimming I do prefer it now. Maybe they just prefer it cause they feel it help performance

I think more men watch sports, so having them wear skimpy outfits helps with the views (which female sports need). Of course, it may also assist in performance not to wear too much. Regarding showcasing their bodies, I think the female athletes are probably divided on it, since women are different in levels of conservatism and confidence.

Anyway, I have to say that I'd love to try running naked! But I have a cousin who's 23 (I think I wrote about her somewhere else in this question) but she said running with big breasts is uncomfortable (she should know). Most of the outfits that women wear have been chosen by a body on each countries athletics boards. The costume is supposed to show the colours, and unified team spirit.

The outifits are also designed to not get in the way of sporting ability.
