I wouldn't do it unless I was defending myself. However, it seems to be a move featured quite heavily in popular media like television, and movies (streaming or network) they give the impression that this is the norm. I work as RN and I really wish it weren't thought of as the norm because I know a move like this can lead to serious injury. I'm not sure what it's going to take to change popular culture though 🤷‍♀️

  It’s not going to change in popular culture you gotta admit a kick in the balls is an effective move that can be funny if you hate the guy or annoyed by a guy.

I seriously doubt that this happens frequently enough to be considered the norm. In a life or death scenario, you best bet that nothing is off limits, but that isn't happening on purpose in a training mat like this image seems to suggest.

  Life or death, sure though I would say the throat and eyes are easier targets and just as effective.
