Girl's Behavior

Graduation User?

A girl in my class (who I've never spoken to before) but have had several classes with made my mutual friend start a conversation with me. She then came into the conversation asking me if I was graduating this semester (I was the only other one else graduating in this class) and told me she had a dilemma. She is also graduating (a couple of days earlier than my ceremony) but they won't let her walk across the stage and get the diploma unless she wears the cap and gown. She said she thinks it's "stupid" of her to spend money on it so she wanted to know if she could just come to my house after I bought my cap and gown set and pick it up to wear for the day and then return it back to me after. She was kind about it but I honestly was shocked and speechless.

I told her kindly I didn't even purchase mine yet, but she told me okay let me know when you will make sure to purchase it before my (her) graduation date. To make this worse she said this in front of the professor so he heard. I told her okay it's no problem because I felt in such an uncomfortable position, but I also thought maybe she genuinely did not have the money for it and I know what it is like to not be able to afford school things. Afterward, we had a whole conversation on plans about the future with my other classmates where she informs me she is a dental hygenist right now and makes around $40 an hour (I don't know if this is true).

When I told my siblings and mom they said that I was being WAY too nice and should not allow her to have it and was rude for coming up to me when she never even tried to have a conversation with me before but was all of sudden started a conversation with me.

What should I do- give it or not? Are there any excuses I can make up kindly or should I just give it to her?
