maybe you find him average looking but she doesn't. maybe they have hobbies in common that they can do together or she really likes his sense of humor or he is caring to her in a way nobody else was before.
relationships are about more than percieved attractiveness and the scales some guys use for male attractiveness isn't exactly what women would go by

Because of the "years later" part. Once she has a bad past, it is mostly low quality people that will accept her.
Same goes for guys. Once the have a bad past and owe child support to a few different women, no good quality person would want them for anything serious either.
