Why did this group of girls stare and laugh?

I was with my friend and we are pretty good friends with the girls in the group.

They looked and started laughing at us randomly in the cafeteria.

We confronted them later about it and they just avoided the question.

Younger girls do this when a girl in the friend group has a crush. Could also be a mean girls bully situation. Can't ever be sure with women.
