Why did she cry when I offered her to go get ice cream?

She's a troubled 28 years old woman. She threatened me with a knife, I calmed her down and asked to give me the knife, which she did, and then asked her if she wanted ice cream. She started to cry, but she wanted it so we got it. Why did she cry? I try to cheer up and say inspirational quotes to her but it doesn't work...

You need to give her lots of hugs and try to encourage her to go see a therapist ASAP.

Get her to a public mental health clinic if she can't afford a private one.

I can afford private therapy if she needs it
The problem is getting her to accept, she refuses when I try to give her money or do groceries for her

Talk to some female therapists yourself first on her behalf and when you find a good one you like, tell her that you ran across some one that would like to talk to her for encouragement.

Now, don't explain to me again all the reasons why this won't work. Just do it.
