Some girls would do that, I know somebody who would date more than one guy she had no interest in, to keep her ex boyfriend interested and afraid of losing a good option but it did not work out in the end. They both ended up with other people.

Possibly, but who has time for someone like that? Life is much much simpler if you just assume that people's actions match their desires. In this case, assume she gave him her number because she wants attention from him, not some third party.
