What is a "pick me" girl?

I see a few girls sometimes now call each other a "pick me" girl now as an insult behind their back but I don't understand what this means.

Those girls like the challenge of getting the seemingly "hard to get to commit" guy- it's more of an ego boost to date that guy- it validates their attractiveness more. As in, if I can get a difficult guy to want me, I must be that special/amazing/hot/insert descriptor.
