Yeah I suppose I would play coed sports if it was just recreational and not serious. I have no clue what you are talking about protective cup. Wear one if you want. I don't care. I also probably won't even notice that a guy has one. I don't make it a habit of staring at guys crotches. Do whatever you want. If that makes you feel safer then by all means.
I play in an intramural softball league, it’s not super competitive or anything but I wore a cup last game and one of the girls I have a crush on noticed and made a joke about the bulge in my shorts
