This expression make me cringe because it is very often misused by people that have absolutely no relation with you. It is derogatory and also insulting to people, mainly when used in connection with children.
I do not tolerate when people talk to me like that and I will also not be afraid to tell them that I am nobody's "babe", "baby", "honey" or "darling".
You may use that derogatory term with your girlfriend if she does not mind but never use it with people you are not familiar with. Not even best friends should call each other "babe" as this gives off a totally wrong message of extreme physical closeness.
In the UK, babe is just a friendly way to address your girlfriends ❤️
I don't like to hear it from anyone.
