Can two friends call each other babe and just be friends or does it usually mean something more?

I have a crush on this guy who seems to be very flirty with me. He calls me babe, sweetheart and hun; makes fun of me; has started to get all touchy and what not, but I can't seem to figure out what's going on with his other friend. When I asked if they are dating he said "not really, it isn't professional", but she will call him babe. They seem to have known each other for quite some time so I wonder if it isn't due to them being long time friends or something. He was also flirty with me when she was around, but idk. Maybe he is just making an ass out of me since he knows I like him.

Depends, some people call everyone shit like that, others reserve it for specific people, you can only tell by seeing what they say to others.
