Should I buy a Lenovo laptop or a MacBook? I'm starting college soon and I am going for Graphic Design. My dream laptop is a MacBook, but it's expensive and I would need to do monthly payments. Still, it could be worth it. But, I also think maybe I should save some money by buying a Lenovo IdeaPad slim 3. I wouldn't need to do monthly payments. The Lenovo makes sense but the MacBook does too, but I don't know if the MacBook will be worth it. I have a iPhone and iPad and so far both are amazing. I need opinions from people with experience.
+1 yI get it , I really do … the “appeal” of the MacBook , I have been an apple user for over 20years , completely buying in to their ecosystem and benefitted greatly from the added functionality offered from having multiple products within the same family.. phone , pad.. tv.. macbook etc
putting that to one side , maybe what matters more is the core purpose of having a laptop generally? Having worked in I. T for most of my adult life , now working in consultancy in guiding multiple businesses , logically I would guide you towards the specification of the device meeting the requirement you have and the application (s) you want to run on it. Should those be served by either then it comes down to what is more financially economical?
So like you I’d be a little torn , financially the MacBook makes less sense given your core requirements , aesthetically , being a thing of beauty by design and being used for a creative application Apple just makes sense even when graphics & compute specification wise the difference is negligible.
Personally I would go with what brings me more joy in using it and for that it’s Apple / MacBook every single time. My personal laptop is a MacBook Pro, my work laptop is a Suface design pro. 😁10 Reply

+1 yIt depends on the workload- or at least the commonly held belief that Windows OS is preferable for business whereas Apple has more appeal to more creative industries. Also, if you're more familiar with 1 OS it will shorten learning curve. I hate Windows. If they spent fraction of the money II n support instead of attorneys hired to lie to the SEC I'd probably noon see that some versions are good. 10 was solid, 7 was better than anything since XP. Windows PCs are much lessn expensive esp. if you need accessories.
The MacBook is far more inspiring to open than any PC. If you could find out if courses include PC utilities/apps that require a specific OS. It was possible to load a program that would allocate a part of the ssd/drive to Windows. It was called Parallels and, though wobbly at times was okay but you would need to buy a used edition and I don't know if Macs made the past couple of years still run the program.00 Reply
+1 yIf you’re going to graphic design, some sort of tablet might work to your benefit more than a MacBook. Even an iPad would be the better choice. My partner had a hard time with his architecture stuff because a MacBook wasn’t (in his words) ‘moveable and integrative’ like the way he wanted. He actually ended up with the idea pad like you considered. It’s more cost efficient and will go a longer way than a MacBook.

+1 yGet the MacBook. The battery life will change your whole lifestyle into a far more productive one.
I've been a Windows guy my whole life but ever since Apple came out with the m1 and m2 processors, the MacBook have become a no-brainer.
Lenovo is a good bang for your buck but they have bad quality control and their motherboards have fried on me multiple times.
A fried motherboard will do things like make your screen stop working randomly, make the computer slow and unreliable for no discernable reason, cause the laptop to power on by itself while it's in your bag, put your laptop to sleep in the middle of a render, cause incredibly embarrassing issues with audio/video outputs etc.
The MacBook is great because it just works and trust me, that's worth more than anything else.

+1 yIf you want something that is easy to repair, customise and upgrade I would go with A frame work laptop. I'm very happy with mine after turning my back on all that disposable garbage. Almost Everything else is made to be thrown away due to a short fuctional life and near impossable to repair. they would rather sell you a new device every 2 years rather then 1 every 15 years.

+1 yIf your going for graphic design i would get a gaming laptop with an nvidia graphics card that way it will be future proof for any program you throw at it. I would probably aim for at least a rtx 4060 which can be had for under $1000 but look around for deals in your area i have seen them as low as $800.

+1 yBest is to check with your college and see what they recommend. They may even have lower cost deals for you.
My SO and I each have Lenovo laptops, and they work well. We don't do graphics but we do often play videos. I've heard Apple products may be better at graphics though. FYI, I dislike Apple products in general... they are overpriced and force the user to do things the Apple way.

A Lenovo Legion is what you need over an Idealpad though. The Ideapad is not made for graphics processing.
But to be fair, your iPad is probably good enough to start the course and they will have machines on campus for you to use anyway.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yThe first thing you need to check is what software you will be using on your course and if it's compatible with Mac OS.
Then you need to take into account the specs to determine what would preform better.
There is a bit of personal preference to factor as well.
Personally I would pick the Lenovo as frankly I dislike apple. I think there products are quite lacking for the cost. I dislike the look of the operating system and it can have other issues as not all programs are designed to work for Mac just adapted.00 Reply- 1.2K opinions shared on Technology & Internet topic.
+1 yneither honestly. macbook is super expensive and it's really only good for peole who use the apple creative software like final cut or garage band and the likes. lenovo has devoloved into a crappy plastic trash brand like acer but at least you can use it for gaming as well unlike the macbook. i guess it really depends on what you wanna do with it.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yMy graphic design school all wanted us to have MacBooks. I went against it because I can't stand that company. Got myself an MSI. Super fast laptop and handled all the Adobe programs plus games.
Wouldn't recommend Graphic Design right now though. Extremely competitive alongside huge job layoffs in the tech sector. I went to a really good school and barely any of the people that graduated from my program have design jobs. Most of them switched to other fields.00 Reply
+1 yI'm a firm fan of mac.
They all prevent updates after a while. That is something that should be stopped, customers pay for a product they should be able to use it until it no longer works not when they choose to stop allowing updates. End vent.10 Reply
+1 yI would recommend speaking with your university to see what they recommend. There's probably not going to be much benefit in going with the Macbook, from a technical standpoint. I had a Lenovo laptop and it was a fantastic machine.

+1 yFor graphic design go higher than both. Get Asus if you can msi would be better. Carries a bigger price tag but you are going into a fairly resource intensive class so might as well make sure you will succeed

How far is the applications transformation towards Apple silicon? I am out of the loop for a while.

@DryGermanGuy Most things currently work on both ARM and Intel. ARM is probably the future, even with PC as Qualcomm seems to be close on that end.

Is it the same idea of fat binary executable they had for a program to run on both PowerPC and Intel?
+1 yI have a Lenovo and it's excellent BUT they are known for poor battery life. The worse.. Get Dell. That was the best laptop I ever had
01 Reply- +1 y
Lol.. if there was one single spec that is possible to override on every single laptop... guess what it is? Battery life. Just plug in an external battery. A freaking ebike battery through a power converter with a safety switch in case of power fluctuations is the absolutely cheapest option. And you know, they are often sold with exaggerated amperage capacity, like, labeled 3kwh when it is truly only 300wh. By running it through a power meter and pointing out that the true power capacity is 1/10th of what's promised to Ebay admins, they force a full refund..
+1 yCheck with your college before you buy anything, there is likely a student discount through the bookstore.
