Which computer should I buy: PC or Mac?

I currently have a Lenovo T510 which I love and still works well. It too heavy though and impractical to carry around. I'm taking a few college courses in September to upgrade my skills at work and need a more portable computer.

Computers have come a long way these days since the early days. More processing power, better screens, better UI/software, faster connectivity and much longer battery life have all played a part in making it a much more enjoyable experience than the machines even from 20 years ago. If I had to decide I would have to say a Mac would be my choice these days. For portability the new Macbook Air with M2 chip would be a good option - they are much more powerful and power-efficient than any Intel-based laptop out there and should be good for Microsoft Office and Adobe software. Only downside is it can't run x86 Windows (it would be using ARM version instead) and SSD storage size is fixed from the moment of purchase (so try to get as big a drive and RAM offering as you can when ordering). For desktops I'd choose the Mac Studio with M1 Max as that is the best value for money system you can get for the price and performance.

Depends what you are doing with it.

But Windows is usually cheaper and more compatible with all sorts of stuff. Apple does need all sorts of adapters when you want to connect something to it.

If you are just need something to open pdf documents, write some texts, ... you are probably fine with any (android) tablet which you can get for a few hundred bucks.

I use my macbook air for school, because it is super light, has a tiny frame, and has great battery power, but still has relatively high specs. It can quickly do what I need. It's more powerful than any of the portable computers that I have seen pound-for-pound. I like the light-up keyboard as well. It comes in handy once in a while.

I have and use other laptops, but my Macbook Air has been the best computer for traveling around campus, taking notes, and getting work done in the libraries, by far.

And not having the right software has not been an issue. Every major program also has a mac version. If this becomes a problem, then you can put Windows on the mac, and pick which one you want to use when you start your computer.

Home computer at a desk is a different story, but I'll talk about that if you ask.

And as a side note concerning buying new programs, many colleges provide many common programs for free to the students. Check in with your advisors, or the website. My schools have provided me with pretty much everything, from every Adobe product to MS office and more.

I could never, ever, ever go back to a windows computer. Ever. But it’s what you can afford. I would do without until I could get another Mac. The unending frustrations of lag and freezing that happens with windows (among a number of others) isn’t worth it. I can accomplish a hundred things on a Mac when windows is still stuck thinking about the first.

I’ve only ever used PC outside of this phone. My husband really likes his iPad that he has some different technologies/programs related to his line of work, so I guess it just needs to relate to what programs you will be running and how easy they are to use, plus finding a lighter with computer would certainly be nice for you.

Buying a Macintosh would mean to re-buy all your relevant software as Apple versions. If they are available as such.

No point going for Mac at this stage. It will add nothing to your skillset.

For school college, windows is cheap and best.
Mac overly high priced but good for image editing work.
