Do people really show their true selves when they are drunk?

I've seen some people express things that they usually tend to hide from others once they are drunk

Well in psychology especially Freudian (yes I know, most of his vuews aren't regarded as much any more and are outdated) he had a concept of the id, ego and superego. The ID is purely all your animalistic instincts and behavior. So it's the begavior you'd exhibit left unchecked. No rules, no inhibitions at all.

Your superego is pure morality. It's the strictest part and if pure superego then you would probably never have any type of fun or take any chances at all

Your ego is dead in the middle and who you ultimately are. It's where it's balanced.

So when we drink a lot and get drunk you're moving more into the ID than normal. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's your true self because your true self is the ego. Having control is part of your true self.

Depends on the person. For myself, I don’t. Only because I feel like even while being intoxicated I can control the things I say. But I do think it makes you more comfortable saying things you usually wouldn’t. I used to have a “friend” that every time we would get drunk, she would insult me and call me bad names. I didn’t think anything of it, but turns out there were always her true feelings.

I don’t know, for myself I think even with alcohol I can still control myself so maybe it depends on the person. Like, I know people who will still drive a car while drunk, while myself, It doesn’t matter how drunk I’ve gotten there’s no way I’m driving a car.

It lowers our inhibitions and seriously interferes with our judgment. You can definitely see a more uninhibited side to a person if the person is normally quite shy or reserved, which we might call a truer and more unfiltered side, but that interference in judgment is not something I'd associate as a truer side.

Certainly do. Alcohol significantly drops a person's inhibitions and they reveal what's truly in their heart.
