I would say it is much more better to be called cute or handsome rather than hot! I personally would say someone is hot if they are physically attractive, but it ends there.

If I like someone, I usually likes complimenting them saying they are handsome. That means they are not just physically attractive but they have a charming personality too.

And if I do call them cute, I must've really liked and adored then. That means I don't like them just for their looks but also for their fun and loving personality. It means I like how they talk and act, just everything about how they react to things. Overall, it's a whole package.
