It sounds like he is just letting you know, that since you 2 ended up broken up , and not together anymore , he is wishing you the best and basically saying whatever happens with you , in the future without him by your side , he hopes nothing bad happens to you. It’s his way of saying he doesn’t hate you , he still considers you a beautiful person , Just because 2 people break up , it doesn't mean you have to hate each other , you both just weren’t compatible with each other. The same thing happened with my ex wife and I , we got to a point where we both knew we weren’t compatible anymore , we were constantly butting heads , and not agreeing on things , we don’t hate each other , we just know we weren’t good for each other anymore. I ran into one of my ex girlfriends a few years later , after her and I broke up , seeing her again brought back so many good memories of our time together , even though she cheated on me and that was the reason we broke up in the first place , I still cared about her and thought she was beautiful girl , I just knew I couldn’t be with her in a relationship again , since she broke my heart the way that she did , She tried getting me back and apologized for what she did , and I forgave her , but sadly I didn’t forget , I couldn’t get over the fact that she cheated on me. I didn’t hate her , I just realized she wasn’t the girl for me , she then showed up to my home and dragged me to my bedroom and we had sex , even though I was upset and angry with her , I still had sex with her and had my way with her , she tried to get me back , after we had sex , but I told her No , I am sorry I can’t , I don’t hate you , but I can’t be with you anymore, I just see you as a friend now , I’m sorry I feel this way , she cried in my arms but understood my decision, I could nt give her my heart 100 percent like I did before when we were together. So we both moved on and I never saw her again , more years went by and she found me on social media and we talked , pretty much as friends , and seeing what each other has been up to with our lives. She tried getting me back again lol , I told her sorry , I am with someone else now , she cried to me again and I said sorry you had your chance the first time around , I moved on.

It can mean that he is feeling is feeling sorry for you and yet can also mean that he cares and worries about you. I wouldn't think too much about it. If you don't want to be friends with this guy, then don't be. He is your ex for a reason, no? Try to move on.

I think he realized you were not compatible but sees you as someone that is worthy of love. I don't think he feels sorry for you, I think he was complimenting you and just wishing you the best of luck. I have never said this exact thing but I have similar with a girl. We went on a date and she was a great girl but we knew it was never going to work between us for different reasons not because there was something wrong with either of us, we just didn't match and I truly wished her luck in finding a guy.
