Why is it not OK to call someone sir?

I called someone that +18 older than me. He corrected me as "John." Does it makes a person feel older?

I actually like being call ma'am. I found that it is very proper and polite. :) Lol, the guy that corrected me isn't exactly a friendly person (his role is a construction superintendent). This is not the first time I get corrected. Oh my.

It tends to feel too formal, so many people will try to put the other person at ease by informing then that they don't need to be so formal.

It also gives the other person a sense of superiority that may make them uncomfortable. Usually, you don't see 2 people calling each other sir or ma'am. So, this means one person is saying "sir" which gives one person a submissive role, and the other a superior role. This makes some uncomfortable, so they prefer to be equals.

It makes some people feel old, and they don't like it. People who are enlisted or were enlisted in the military do not like to be called sir because that's a term reserved for officers. Personally, I'm going to have to get used to it due to my "job." I don't like it because it shows dominance from my end, and I don't like dominating people.

When a person corrects you, it's not to make you feel bad or make you feel like you did something wrong, they're just trying to help. Calling a man, "sir" is actually polite manners when addressing them, but if they turn around and tell you to call them by their name, they're just telling you its OK to use their name

Oh no! lol I hate being called ma'am. Sir sounds old; if I was a guy I wouldn't like to be called sir either. I like being called miss. :-)
