It really depends on a number of things. My first couple days or so are usually pretty steady flow so I use tampons. Once that tapers and it is more spotting I just use pads. I am pretty regular and predictable because I am on birth control. It isn't actually for birth control but the hormones in the meds that keep me pretty regulated. When I first started with periods they were so bad that I had to be on medication. Over the many years (and especially switching meds 4 years ago) my periods are almost like clockwork and don't deviate one month to the next all that much.

The regularity was the same when my girlfriend was on birth control too. Funnily enough, she actually had a shorter time between periods on birth control than before she was on it. Her periods generally run where she has about 28 days between the ending of her last one and thr start of her next one. They weren't as spread out when she was on birth control, and now that she's off it again, the 28 days are back, although she usually starts and ends light.

I am fairly spaced evenly. Though it has been a very long time on it. From what I know and personal experience the longer you let that build up in your system the more things become "regular". At least that is how it has been for me over many, many years. I am much like your girlfriend that starts with a moderate flow and then ends light with not much more than spotting. More or less two days where I need a tampon and then pads are sufficient.
