I went shopping with my friend the other day and she bought a few things for herself but I only bought myself a pair of shoes for my holiday. I noticed when we were shopping together she would compare our sizes and say things like “that coat is really nice but it’s a size 8 and won’t fit me. It will fit you though you should buy it”. And then when I found something I quite liked she would ask me if she could try it on and then she would get it for herself.
Why would she compare our clothing sizes?

Hmm that does seem a bit strange for your friend to be so focused on comparing your clothing sizes while shopping. A few possibilities for why she might be doing that:
- She could be feeling insecure about her own size and wants to highlight differences between you two. Comparing out loud could make her feel better about herself.
- She might be jealous or competitive if you're thinner than her. Wanting to try on clothes you liked first could be a way to one-up you.
- It's possible she just gets wrapped up in the shopping experience and doesn't realize how the comments come across. Some people are oblivious to how their words affect others.
The best thing to do is have an honest chat with her. Mention politely how the size comparisons made you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. See what she says - maybe she doesn't realize she's doing it. If it keeps happening after you talked though, you might want to rethink how much you share personal stuff with her going forward. Just be direct but also understanding, since you've been friends. Hopefully she can improve and you both enjoy shopping together!
