I find it jarring as a bystander. A guy I worked with would say mate to women and I would inwardly cringe.

He rarely would say mate to a man, so I have no idea of why he did that. He rarely got positive responses.

Our gender is very intrinsic to us. Do you dislike it because it is not acknowledging your femininity? Most men wouldn't like it f it was reversed. Like some guys will say brother to a girl. If a girl said sister addressing them they wouldn't like it.

Yes you got it exactly. Coming from a guy. . Especially one that has acknowledged me as attractive... definitely defeminises me. Brother and mate are similar terms that just seem off.

Yeah I never call of my girls who are friends dudes. I usually just say her name or if it’s a group I say ladies maybe guys but I feel that kinda like calling them dudes also. I know my friends when not like being called a dude even if she is like a tomboy or try being one of the guys.

Weirdly I think a girl saying it to other girls is fine. But defo a jokey thing. It just feels unnatural for a guy to say it to a female as it has strong male overtones. I think it wd be OK to a girl who wanted to be identified male...

I call all living creatures "dude" as an expression. Same as I call them "Jesus" as an expression. At the beginning of a sentence, not at the end. If that bothers people, and they really think I believe they are a dude, or Jesus, then they should talk to me about it. Or a professional, if they can't make sense of what I mean.

But I would never say to a woman "what's up dude?" Just like I wouldn't say "what's up Jesus?"

Here in the UK it's not a word that's so commonly used... In fact I don't ever recall hearing it, and I've certainly never been called one.
