Why do girls cover their mouths?

I can only speak for myself, I was taught to cover my mouth when I gasp. It is a polite way to do and It also a protective gesture since it conceals my emotion from others; to avoid showing that I am shocked.

Concealing my emotion is beneficial for both. After the shocked, I, initially scream and cover my mouth, since my emotions is pretty intense (that send attention/negative messages which I don’t intend) it is simply how I process to moderate my initial response.

It must be a generation thing or location thing because all lot of the place I've been to or girl I know don't really do that and I live in the east coast

They've been trained, as young girls, to make sure they don't spit when laughing or crying; that's not lady-like. Hence, they cover their mouths whenever there's a possibility of that happening.
