How can you tell if a gift might mean something more?

So I have this female friend I'm kind of into. We don't see eachother very often, so I've not considered dating her (yet). I'm definitely into her.

Out of the blue recently she sent me a gift by mail. It's nothing big, but pretty nice all the same.

How can you tell if it might mean something more?

I had a guy friend from college, we got to know each other through our mom's. I never considered him more than a friend. I would send him little things for his birthday and occasionally Christmas. Did she get you something she may have overheard you saying you needed? Was a gift that's kind of a personal type gift? Like cologne or a type of drink you like? Maybe a gift card for a restaurant she knows you like? Things like that are good signs. If it's a flashlight or a Starbucks gift card, she's doing it because she appreciates your friendship and was thinking of you.

No. I have done that for a friend and rest assured it didn't mean anything more. Why don't people understand that a gift is just a gift and nothing more than appreciation towards a friend?
