Is it appropriate to ask a person if by any chance they receive a gift?

For Christmas my mom and me gave a relative some gifts, but the relative was not present that night so we gave the father the gifts to give it to his son. The son (who is 19) never ever thank me or mom for the gift not even with a mobile text, but we assume his dad gave it to him. This cousin son is like that he never appreciate or thank anyone anything even if we took him account for gifts cause he is family.

Anyway. since we dont know if he got the gifts or at least if he received it and at least say thanks to us. I asked the relative itself if his dad gave him the present.

Did I do the right thing? I ask because this boy dad (my couisn) had always been an informal person,. That Christmas dinner I gave him a gift in front of him, he did not open it right away and he did not gave me a gift back (well that is not important anyway) Also, his dad could get upset at me for asking his son if he gave the gift to him, cause he probably did give him the gift, but since I did not receive a Yes or a No or a Thanks from the son, there is a chance he may or not receive the gift, I just wanted to confirm that is all.

My cousin also has a daughter and the same happened to her, she did not give thanks either to me or mom days after as she was also not present that Christmas dinner.
