Do WOMEN get SARCASM?

Question

Sarcasm is defined as "the use of irony to mock or convey contempt".

Very few women I've ever known get sarcasm. They usually don't recognize sarcasm, and if they do, they are either confused by it, or think it's truth.

What do you think? Do women get sarcasm?

I told my wife that I was upset, because Trump's 2024 election means I need to find a new answer to the Trivia question "What US President was elected to non-consecutive terms?" She just looked at me and said, "So...".

Sarcasm is an interesting word, it combines sarc, the old Greek word for flesh with the word orgASM. I can't speak for all women but I don’t fck with sarcasm. I get it sometimes, sometimes I don’t. But in general, it comes across as being a smartass which I don’t find cute. I prefer light hearted humor or wittiness

I do think the male and female sense of humor is somewhat different. Female is usually gentler and often self deprecating, a classic punchline being "And I thought that...".

Male humor I think is less person oriented and more object/concept oriented and likely harsher or darker. That might be where your wife missed.

I don't think the divide is that great but there is capacity not to recognize a piece of humor and I find it necessary at times - especially with women - to say that was a joke.

There is an equally valid alternative explanation for this effect however.

There is sarcasm and satirical, ironic and sardonic all slightly different but best done deadpan. I consider laconic to be on the spectrum too.

I'm  confused  about your description. "Very few women I've ever known get sarcasm" You don't strike me as being into trolling, and if you're not, then I sincerely don't understand the world you're living in, because sarcasm has never been a matter of genders, it's all engraved in the environment we developed from. I see that everywhere around me. You have me intrigued about your circles and surroundings now 🤔

I think a lot of them get it, but you should avoid it anyway. I try to avoid being sarcastic because it's often received as being bitter, insulting, or condescending and cutting. I don't want people to associate me with that kind of hostility, the way they did earlier in life.

Sarcasm tends to be an American thing. And often used to cut people down under the guide of humor, so woman can tend to use and like it less.
You'll notice other countries tend to have other types of more common humor in the cultures. Like England. They tend to lean heavily dry.. probably because of all the rain.

I'm kinda surprised by your experience, from my experience girls are highly sociable so they tend to be highly aware of social queue's. I do joke around sometimes in a misleading style and my ex always got all of it, she was very socially intelligent to so she could be an outlier but I never got the impression other girls don't get it.

Many of them get it from me :D... Anyhow: in my own perception I see a majority of women not really having a talent for it (to discover, or to apply) --- but those who do are awesome :)

As with most things some people do, some don't. Also subtlely sarcastic comments delivered online can be lost in the text without hearing the vocal inflections or seeing the facial expressions.
