Why do women always say “Men don’t like funny women “, even though men say that they want a funny woman?

On Reddit, there are tons of posts on r/Askwoman or r/TwoXChromosomes about how men don’t like funny women.

And yet, go to r/Askmen, and the men say that they love funny woman.

What accounts for this paradox?

Because in their mind they think they’re funny when they’re really not. I’ve never really met a funny ass chick. They usually get offended by jokes. I’d love a funny woman, but like I said a lot of them aren’t funny.

I‘m told I’m funny, my best guy friend told me I should do stand up and I just seem to be able to make people laugh - men and women - and I still manage to attract all sorts of men. And this is in real life so they are fully aware of my personality.

But I think there’s still a stigma, a hangover from years ago, where being funny isn’t seen as feminine. Where women were just there to look after men, be pretty and make their husbands look good. It’s the kind of outdated view my 87 year old Dad might have! It’s total and utter crap, but girls still get fed this kind of rubbish, and there are probably some guys out there who think this too. Plus, in my experience men want to make people laugh and be the funny one.
What I have found is that guys really DON’T like it when women banter! I work with a lot of young men and a male friend told me it’s because they generally don’t take other men seriously when they make fun of each other, but if a women does it they think she means it because as a rule girls don’t do that and are kinder in general. I’ve had to learn to tease, not banter, as I’ve inadvertently upset a guy or 2 this way!

I quite like the humor of everyday women.

Female stand ups less so because they are very obvious and I have contempt for humor where you know what the punch line is before it is said.

Women have a different manner with humor and what is funny from a man is not necessarily funny from a woman and vice versa.

I like ironic, sardonic and laconic humor myself. Women are quite good at ironic.

Nobody likes a sarcastic woman though (men in particular).

Sardonic probably challenges most women. Laconic challenges everybody.

It is probably all centered around this.

I have met ONE funny woman and that girl had some SCARS. I have met hundreds of funny men.

There is a mental quickness and agility required for funny. Combined with, honestly, a life of pain and neglect that just comes with being a man. Cause no one gives two shits about a man, except him.

Women are not exposed to a level of rejection and vitriol. Even the fat and ugly ones. They are still treated with some level of compassion and forgiveness.

However, you rarely see very handsome, funny men.

Pretty men are like pretty women, they get their asses licked from jump, unless they are dirt poor. Even then.

Women are funny, when they are not trying to be. Then they are the brunt of the joke.

That's different.

I'm actually very big on humour in a relationship, I tend to be a bit self-deprecating with my sense of humour because I decided I didn't want to take myself too seriously, there's something magical about a well-timed joke that gets a giggle out of a girl, I read somewhere online that some girls find guys with a self-deprecating sense of humour, sexy, and sexually attractive, an example of a guy's self-deprecating sense of humor might be something like this, the girl might ask him if he's a great cook, he might respond with "Yeah, I'm a great chef, my signature recipe... burnt toast!"

I think men like women who are funny if they're not funnier than the man in question or men in general. It's that competition, male ego thing that could threaten the balance of "funny" power in the couple.

Not saying. all men are like this about their partners/friends. I think this is just as true about male/male "funny" relationships. Someone has to take the lead in humor. Also would ring true for those with very different humor sensibilities, too.

They say I'm funny but I don't think I am that funny and I don't equal being funny as sexy so nighmare situation is for me that I try to be in my view appealing and not funny and I get by their laughs that I'm funny. I still do not get how funny equals being sexy, attractive with guys but have learned to accept it as one of those mysteries in life I will never have the brain to solve. I go with it and take it as an extra plus.

I’ll flatter myself that I’m a funny woman, however it’s true, men SAY they want a funny woman but typically they end up with the helpless waif or the bombshell gal who doesn’t know how to use her own phone.

The funny gal ends up being the guy’s friend.

The sexes are different kinds of funny. Men are abstractly funny, we can laugh at any random joke without much set up. Women are informationally funny, they need details and a clear mental picture to enjoy a joke. Sure there are exceptions but very rarely on both sides.

it's projection. they think they are funny but not in a way men will like. they think that about themself so they assume that it's true. never asking men if it's true or not. just assuming it is and then throwing it out there. the reason they do this is caus they're scared of not being seen as a funny person. and they mitigate that fear by just not assuming they are seen as funny so they can't be hurt even if someone ever tells them they aren't funny.

Having known both women very well, the boisterous loud laugh on repeat and the loud boisterous obnoxious ill humored women I'll take the laughing funny woman every time!!
