Girls, for those of you who have been the "nerdy girl" how did you feel about it?

If you're a girl that could be considered nerdy how has it affected your friendships and relationships?

I have different parts of me and one is being nerdy, I am different because I want to be. I thought I would get bullied but they mistook my shy ways as in me being "cool" and to my own surprise guys were gentle and protective of me, when a new guy in school would try something the others stoped him. I was a nerd with a temper so if something did happen I reacted so fast. Took them by surprise and ended up looking like idiots themselves. It has only been afterwards when I felt shocked myself as to what I had done. I would get detention for talking back to a teacher who abused their power and I would have no regrets of that, but I know the other guys at detention looked at me in disbelief as I would enter, me mumbling. People could think they could walk all over me, but I do have my limits and when I could not take it no more I snap. The word of advice if you hapoen to be a nerd which us something by the way you should be proud of I think you do need a temper to go with it. If you have an intelligence, a senitivity use it for all it's worth, react and surprise your bully or for example make it a public display of them arguing with them, it is not as if they can bring much to the table anyhows, they might still be in shock their tactic failed on them, their ego goes blank, and the rest can tell how stupid they are, they will then leave you alone.

Bottom line is you have to fight bullies tactics with tactics yourself. This is something school never tells you. You need also a friend. If I could tell someone was to be bullied I would be their friend, that they did not ask for, lol, showing up beside them, and I learned that because what ever status I had, supporters, the target was no more a target.

I've done the same as an adult when I can tell someone is a target, you go to them, you watch out for them, you pep talk them to ignore, get up a mental wall because a bully can not succeid with its stupid mission if you do not agree with it, but you have to outsmart them at their own game, you can't have a vulnerability because that is their way in.

If you are a girl it's crazy how different images of yourself you can display, image out, and how this in return effect your surrounding in how they think of you. Their own prejudice or knowings of what type you are. I learned that little lesson when watching others, looking for a particular job or trying to get access somewhere. It's fun.

I think there are bullies out there who think if they dress or act a certain way they are in the group of the lets say bad boys, just to use a term, but within the bad boy group are guys who very much know the difference from right or wrong and have principles, they do not bully on easy targets lets say us nerds, they too have an intelligence on their own to recognize that nerds are intelligent too in their own way, they don't bully nerds, they have a problem with injustice and those people who have power who abuse it, difference. They are too the ones who are going to help you put a bully, who wants to pretend they are them, in place.

I've seen way too many beloved nerds, one is one too many, out there be bullied because they have a vulnerability and they have no tactic, they don't know them or refuse to use them, but it's the only way to make a bully get it, feel defieted and leave you alone, as it messes with their bully ego to not have won over you. Don't feed the monsters 😀

The American term of "nerd" is weird to me. Like do you call a woman who's academically successful and is hardworking a guy? I don't know but in my situation, I have always been successful at school, always had max 2 close friends at school and was not social. Was a bookworm, was crazy about science and was a star wars fan. I think I could be considered nerd but I have never had any difficulty with it. Then when I started college, I was afraid I wouldn't find any friends but now I have a nice friends group. I'm just realizing they are also nerd. A PhD student in physics, a master student at law school, an aerospace engineer doing masters, another PhD student at biology. And I assure you, those guys have fun the most. More than anyone I have ever met

Do people just equate being successful with being a nerd? Then hell yeah, nerds rule! Congrats on the PhD

I don't really know. I guess it's about interests. We don't like clubs but we have some other hobbies. I'm writing poetry (yeah that's considered nerd), one of us is playing piano, other one is in an aircraft team and such things

Being nerdy was part of how I hid that I was trans, from the world, after I came out in 2022, it was like How do I stop being nerdy when it's also part of my dyslexia.

For me, I see being an analytical know it all as a curse, because I find it so difficult to have a carefree conversation without talking technically about some stupid irelivency like the commonality of lack of social skills in people with high I. Q's

I embraced it. I didn't when I was in high school but once I got to college, I embraced who I was and met like-minded people.

I have always had many nerdy friends, so that was never an issue.
