This girl I like sat next to me on the train one day. I started talking, and she continued the conversation, talking even more. She said she doesn't know anyone in our village. The next time I saw her, it was very late—around 11 pm when we arrived. She kept talking until the point where our ways parted. She sometimes laughs, but she's mostly serious. With some jokes, she doesn't seem to get them, and I fear she might think I am stupid. So far, we've talked about college, family, books (which she seems to be really into), etc. I've talked to her a few more times, but she never starts the conversation. She once walked right past me.

Difficult to say from what you write but I would think that she is just being polite answering your questions and keeping the conversation alive.

Since she is not the one initiating conversation and does not start with asking questions, it seems to me that she simply listens to you and not wanting to be rude, continues with the conversation.

If she is mostly serious, then I would tend to believe that she is not really into you and even your jokes seem to be a mystery to her. If she was into you, she would probably reciprocate with some jokes of her own but here, she is rather passive.

Ask her to get tea or coffee with you and chat with her in a nice non-moving setting. If she refuses, she's not really interested. If she says yes, you might have a chance.

She's literally standing right in front of you periodically and you're asking a bunch of strangers on the internet if she likes you? Ask her to grab a cup of coffee or dinner to continue the conversation sometime. You'll have her response instantly. This ain't rocket science.

The trick is treat it like any other relationship or freindship, dont see it as a romantic connection yet. Get to know her as a freind, if its mean to be more it will happen but dont cling to this specific connection. There are many nice girls in the world and this is just one.

Personally I would work on building your confidence first. Interesting fact being shy is actually very similar to extreme extravert in that its a want for attention or assumption that you will get it. Shy people are always worried about what people think of them, dont be, it doesn't matter what she thinks or doesn't think, talk to lots of people and find out about their lives, old / young/ homeless, rich, you'll find you build rapor with many.

Then you can go back approach this specific girl with an open mind, non clinging or wanting, you might be surprised what happens. Actually she will see a confidence in you that is solid and attractive, or she might not - who cares.

Be confident about you, look in the mirror and find positive points about yourself, what do you have to offer in personailty or interests. Sense of humour? She sounds like a serious type, hard work :) . She probably has her own insecurities, but dont worry about it.

Its not easy I know but first open up your world, then you might find the world around you and others gravitate to it.
