I’m trying to decode a girl’s behavior. Here is the timeline:

The Indirect: She mentioned that she likes light-colored eyes (I’m the only one in our group with light eyes, so it felt pointed).

The Validation: She told a mutual friend that I’m 'not a-flat-out-ugly guy' (basically confirming I'm attractive in her eyes).

The 'Preference' Comment: However, in front of a group (including me), she said that she 'prefers dark-skinned guys (morenos) over light-skinned guys (blancos)'.

My question is: If she already established that she likes my specific features (eyes) and thinks I'm attractive, why would she go out of her way to say she 'prefers' a different type in a group setting?

Is she trying to lower my confidence so I don't feel too 'sure' about her?

Is she just being honest about her 'ideal' type while still being attracted to me as an exception?

Or is this a way to hide her interest from the group by leaning into a general preference?

Let me start by saying that I hope you made this post with some level of open-mindedness. I hope you are willing to look outside of your personal biases, and that if you reply to my opinion it won’t be with be with rudeness, defensiveness (since I have no intent on being ‘offensive’), or dismissal simply because you may not like my analysis of this situation.


So when I read through all of your examples, I genuinely feel as though a lot of overthinking is happening in moments where you probably shouldn’t do that. Like her making mention of liking guys with light colored eyes, I believe that’s just as generic as saying she prefers tall men, or dark skinned men as she went on to say elsewhere. I don’t think she means anything by it, I don’t think she’s sending subliminals, just answering questions that she’s clearly being asked.


With the validation thing, I didn’t read that as validating at all. In fact I don’t see how hearing you’re “not a flat out ugly guy” is anywhere equivalent to being described as attractive, just that you’re decent looking. In any case, even if we play devils advocate and say she were complimenting you, that doesn’t mean she’s romantically interested.


Now, I’m sure you may not agree with my logic. However, when we’re talking about crushes and trying to decipher what this or that could mean, I think it’s hugely important to keep in mind that neither of us know the answer with 100% certainty, since we don’t have her input, meaning that without confirmation, my take on this would be just as fair and worth consideration as yours. Unless she’s told you herself that she’s interested, this is all speculative and I hope you’re genuinely interested in exploring outside opinions.

a preference is just that... a preference

and that means that you like or appreciate something just slightly better than the other things you also like... it is not an exclusion, but an inclusion

for example, I love chicken... and I usually prefer chicken, does that mean I will always eat chicken instead of beef or pork? no... absolutely not, pork is great, beef is also great...

I prefer chicken, and most of the times I would eat that first... but not only chicken, I'll have the other two as well...

I prefer chicken... but when I have tacos, my favorite are not "chicken tacos" no way... my favorite tacos are Tacos al Pastor, and these are usually beef and pork, not chicken

now... girls (and dudes too) might have preferences, yes... but that does not usually mean, they will exclude everything else, nor that they will love it less

one of my exes liked beards A LOT, for whatever reason... and she also preferred shorter hair as well, however... she was crazy about me and loved my guts, even if I had longer hair and a clean cut shave

another of my exes had a preference for blond guys/light brown hair and eyes, she really really liked that type and also more slim... and yet, again... even crazier about me and loved me to death... even if my hair and eyes are black AF, and I'm definitely not slim at all

and there are more exes... and more examples about what a girl might prefer, but not EXCLUDE the rest, and LOVE is different from preferences, I think you can get the point
