What does it mean when a girl stares into your eyes and smiles?

i have always been a shy guy, but not to the extreme. I have also quite a low confidence level due to several rejections.

so anyway a few days ago, I had to gather in a group with a few other people to come up with something for a school event. during the discussion, I noticed the girl sitting directly opposite of me staring at me. so I decided to look right back at her. instead of looking away, she continued to stare into my eyes and smile. being the shy guy I am, I couldn't last for 3 seconds before looking away from her gaze. after that, there were still many instances during the group discussion where I saw her looking at me, even when it wasn't my turn to voice out my ideas.

after that discussion, I didn't get to go up to her and talk to her and I'm kinda regretting it. but I plan to look her up when school reopens. I also tried adding her on Facebook but it has been 3 days and she hasn't accepted or rejected my request.

this has really got me think, is she interested in me? if so then why hasn't she responded to my request? or am I just over thinking all these?

side note: the discussion was the first time I met her.

Sounds like definite flirting to me - eye contact is a big sign, all the more when it is continued and accompanied by a smile. At this point, I wouldn't obsess over why she hasn't done anything about your friend request, and I think you should take the juncture to say hello to her in person as soon as possible. She might not add people she hasn't had the opportunity to get to know first, and it's also possible she just hasn't had a chance to get on Facebook or check her requests.

Don't be discouraged, especially because of other people in the past.

Seriously, it means she's into you. Go say hi and start something! A girl looks at a guy she likes. Especially repeatedly... she was hoping you'd get the hint and probably went home rejected but you can still fix it! :)
