My girlfriend has mild mental retardation?

I love this girl a lot and this fact is not going to change the way I feel about her. The thing is that her parents told that there is something I need to know before getting serious with their daughter. What they told me is that she has a condition called mild mental retardation and requires a lot of help in the things in life. I already knew she was kind of different but today they confirmed why. I told them that I will accept her the way she is and they gave me their blessing. I just want some advice about this condition and what to expect down the road in a relationship with her. She is 18 right now and I'm 24.

I am sure you will gain a lot of insight into her particular challenges the longer you date her. If her parents were so comfortable explaining the situation to you, you should seek their advice too and find out what activities you should not assume she is able to do without guidance.

My mother's boyfriend is in a stage of Alzheimer's and as it has been progressing it has been unclear what he can and cannot do. They went on vacation recently and she found out that he can no longer be left to find his own way back to an unfamiliar place. They were in the hotel, she wanted to go shopping and he went off to their room but was confused when he got there and could not find his key. Housekeeping had to help him.

I realize this is different but in a way it is similar. My mom and her boyfriend will continue to have to figure out what he can and cannot do. You are just starting out with your girlfriend so you have a ways to go to understand what she can and cannot do. That way you can avoid getting angry with her if you expect her to be good at something you may take as something anyone should be able to do. Good luck!

Each person is different. Just make sure you explain everything you're doing with her before you do it. The biggest thing I would worry about is going over procedures in the case of an emergency. With her it would be wise to teach her to get help asap because in those sorts of situations you need someone who is fast on their feet and a good problem solver. But really, you just have to treat her like you treat everyone else. With love and respect.

I read the definition of retard. I’m not entirely sure, but I think my girlfriend is mildly retarded or it could be all the drug abuse. She is so incredibly dysfunctional and can’t seem to not mess everything up. How did I get into this mess?
