you don't need to be a player. it is usually the way you approach a girl (confident-not over confidence) and your flirting skills (communication). girls want nice guys, but there is no fun when someone is too good to be true so act cool (dont be way too nice, but be a gentlemen).

I think the reason players get more girls is because they go for it. Nice guys I think just sit back more while a player will actually let the girl know he is interested and give her attention. That is the part girls like about them, so be nice and don't be a player, but make sure the girl knows that you want her.
