How do you describe someone who is an "intellectual bully"? Have you known anyone that you consider as one?

I've heard this term used from time to time, and I'm curious about how people personally define "intellectual bully".

Do you know or have known anyone that you or other would consider an "intellectual bully"?

What did this person do (or not do), say (or not say), and how did this person carry himself/herself, that made you or others classify that person as such?

Please be detailed so we can understand your perspective.

I immediately thought of the kind of person who thinks they're superior to others because they're smart (according to their definition of "smart"). I've heard so many people say things like, "Kids these days just don't care about education/learning" or something similar, like they're not aware that some kids grow up in bad communities or bad schools that essentially MAKE them dumb. It's purposely ignoring the wide variety of situations out there just so you can feel good about yourself.

It also reminds me of the kind of person whose most common "rebuttal" in a debate is, "That's not logical" and then not coming up with anything of their own, as if their mere ability to point out fallacies should leave everyone gaping with awe :P Same with pointing out grammatical/spelling errors and thinking that makes you "win" an argument.

I think they are like any other bully, insecure and have a chip on their shoulder, you may be the smartest person on the planet, but if you can't peacefully communicate with another human, and you constantly have to prove yourself, there is something wrong with you..

Intellectual bully- I would say someone who is quite knowledgeable, but also has the idea that whatever they say is correct...probably very opinionated and have the right background knowledge to make it seem as if they are correct

Intellectual Bully. Hmm. I think people who have college degrees fit this category. They think highly of themselves, like they are "intellectually" superior to someone who does not have a degree. Truth is, we all operate in different levels of intelligence.

I don't got a college degree, but I can make someone cry, weep and curl into a ball by just using words. I had an affair with a cougar a long time ago, she used to be a military interrogator overseas. Lets just say she taught me everything :)

From my personal experience, Yes I know someone who is one. A friend who is a commissioned officer in the Navy. I think he is a Captain by now. Anyway, he treats non-commissioned officers and personal like rats. He calls them stupid, illiterate, and all the passive-aggressive words you can ever think off.

officers are not intelectual bullies. You will find that most are lacking in that department. But They do feel they are entitled because they have a rank that was given to tham. And advanced because of those people under them not throwing them under a bus. It has more to do with perspective than anything. I was in the Navy for 6 years. I ran into a few of these guys. No all are like that but a good amount. They don't like being showed up by someone lower rank than them.

eh I disagree. not all people with a college degree flash their minds.
In my own experience, its usually those with a tech degree or no degree that think they are superior. not all. many of those in the military are trained though to basically bully into getting information. it depends on the person really

My grandmother was one. As was my great grandfather.

My grandmother did things that hurt the family. And then would ignore that they had happend. When confronted she would act hurt that you had brought it up. ANd they cry and beg for another chance blah blah blah. It happened often.

My grandfather was verbally abusive to my grandfather and his children (including my infant father) he was sometimes passive aggressive and other times demonic.

I met him only once. And that was once too many.

To me it has more to do with manipulation then screaming and yelling. If you watch survivour look at Jonathan Penner. His conversations with Lisa was textbook Intellectual bullying

imo, intellectual bully is someone who is clever enough to commit bad things without getting caught. even he/she is so manipulative that he/she can make evil look good, and good look evil. he/she makes the offender look like the victim, and the victim look like the offender.

if someone robs you and beats you, everybody knows he/she is the evil one while you are the oppressed one. but if he/she manipulate truth using his/her power, charisma, money, mass media, etc, he/she can make people think you are the evil one. that is intellectual bully.

basically, intellectual bully commits crime but their victims are the ones to blame.

Mostly everyone has said it. Just someone who thinks their smarter than you an will usually try to play head games with you.

or think they are. most will relay random facts from bs websites and try to over-talk the person they debate with. that's when you say agree to disagree or it is what it is. they will think they win regardless but really you have the upper hand and adult approach. there's not arguing with a know it all. I have met a few.

My interpretation of what it might be is someone who picks on you for being dumber than they are.
