Why do people yell at cashiers?

I'll never understand what goes through someone's mind when they yell at a cashier because they won't get to them fast enough or because they won't let them skip to ring them up.

What makes it worse is the people yelling and acting a mess look like they're lower class & do menial jobs that nobody respects so why treat others like that?

Most of the time, when someone has a really bad day they still need to go grocery shopping at the end of the day. While some people enjoy this task, many people already hate it, and it just causes so much stress on them. They'll growl at anyone they happen to bump into while browsing through the store, and they'll easily let off on their cashier. Why? Because they need to let off steam, and they know that the chances of them being remembered are slim and none. It can be incredibly easy for a person to have a go at a stranger just because they know'll they'll be forgotten, and for the same reason it's easy for some people to tell the cashier all about their day and their life story. Cashiers are generally nice people if they enjoy their job, and will listen to your woes; and even some of the angrier cashiers will listen because they're paid to. I never let the customer get to me, you know? I understand that they're probably a really good person on a normal day, and that they just need an outlet. I always feel great when I can manage to make the person's day a little better as well, so it can be a win-win! :D

It's usually 2 types of people on opposite spectrums.

Entitled stuck up rich people. They do this less often but it happens. they're typically the whiny accommodate me and do things for me that you wouldn't typically do for anyone else because I'm special types

And lower class trailer trash/hoodrats. I think it's because in their day to day life they are bottom rung so they finally feel fancy when they are being "served" and get to take it out on a cashier. they know they can do this without any real consequences because the cashier's not gonna mess up their job by going off on them. It's like the abused girlfriend who goes out and acts like bitches to other girls. They are transferring their emotions onto someone "safe"

I'm guessing cause they're the ones the angry person sees. Like first my mom was angry at the cashier then the manager showed up and she directed her anger towards the manager. I was working and I wasn't even this woman's waitress, the girl waiting on her wasn't there at the time but she directed anger at me because I was the only one on the floor at the time.

Because they can find release without negative consequences for themselves. Just like how complaining on the internet makes people (example: you) feel better about themselves by affirming their moral standing without actually having to act upon it.

Which leads to this better question: why would someone let someone yell at a cashier?

A scene was already taking place evidently, much to the detriment of the cashier. And nobody stepped in, they just watched the scene unfurl. Unfortunately the only one walking away from it feeling like shit is the cashier, while you get to complain and also tell yourself that you did the right thing by staying out of it. The reality of it is that you, along with anyone else there, made as much of a choice as the 'ghetto' people, and both choices were hurtful to the cashier.

That's an extreme comparison and my actions are completely unrelated to what those individuals were doing. If I had said something and they got confrontational (or physical) then that would have only added to the chaos. Playing the hero doesn't always make you one

It's a basic thing to do, not playing the hero. People break up fights all the time. My point is that it's the same motivation behind someone stepping on a cashier and stepping on 'trailer trash' on the internet. Arguably one is more damaging, but one is more hypocritical. I just want to make sure you don't think you're superior. Everyone sucks in their own way.

I can't stand when people do that. It's just awful. I'm guessing they do because they are nothing but impatient jackasses with no manners, no consideration, and no respect for anyone. It's just ridiculous how some people behave.

Many people do this.It happens in my country too.Some people look down on certain jobs and feel they are better than them. They know they can get away from it since they are the customers.That is why I hate the term "customer always right"

Because people who are cashiers are looked down upon by society and some people feel like that they can talk to them anyway. They get yelled at by co workers and customers alike.
