Why do they always have a person directing customers to a particular cashier at stores?

It's kind of annoying honestly, like okay why do I have to walk all the way over here when I can just wait 5 more seconds for this person to be done? Same thing with the self checkouts.

the idea is to keep the queues shorter and people moving. its also a sort of random job that I know at least here in the Uk is rarely its own role/is a thing

Yes. You're the customer. You're the boss, not them. Just smile and say: "Nah, I'm good." Then they can ask the person behind you.
