Why do people consider it rude to put the money on the counter instead of handing it to the cashier?

@smahala1991 can you clarify your question as it seems many commentors are assuming you are asking your question based on the cashier having their hand out waiting to be handed the money.

Obviously, if their hand is out to receive the cash and it is put on the counter that is incredibly rude and disrespectful. However, if it is a situation where a customer merely puts the cash on the counter without the cashier's hand being extended I don;t believe that to be any sort of problem or disrespect.

It’s not really a experience in my pov but my manager was bringing it up it’s disrespectful for them to pass it on the counter instead of handing it to the cashier

Imagine the cashier reaching out to hand you your change and at the last moment putting it on the counter. Now imagine that happen about a couple hundred times in an 8 hr. Span.

We all deal with 💩 at our jobs that irk us. I'm sure your job is no different. If you've ever worked at a convenience store there a list of aggravation from the people who b**** to you about sales tax, the price of gas, even price increases as though you make the f***ing prices. I refused to worked evening shifts because you're getting the bulk of people getting off work and they all want to verbally abuse you for the 💩ty day they had at work.

Working at convenience stores suck man. The money thing is more of just an annoyance though. Like I say it's people throwing thier money at you a few hundred times in a shift.

For what it's worth, I have seen cashiers putting the money on the counter themselves if the customer looks ill/infectious. That and vice versa is perfectly alright with me.

Speaking from experience, I’m a germaphobe. I don’t like to use cash if I can help it, but when I do use cash I kindly place it on the counter in order to avoid direct contact with the cashier.

It's nothing personal, I tend to have a weak immune system so I tend to get easily sick, other people have a stronger immunity so a little interaction wouldn’t affect them as much as it would for me, sometimes I wear gloves to help prevent the contact of money as well….

Yeah maybe I go a bit overboard but I can’t risk getting sick by careless individuals, you know the ones who don’t practice good hygiene when they are coughing and sneezing everywhere. I just… I can’t okay? No disrespect.

Apparently it was an Australian custom once I heard lol to just hand the cash rather than drop it on the counter lol "flaunting my wealth" lol 😆 or seen as "pick up servant" lol 😂😆 vibe

During covid it was the reverse that was considered as rude and now in France we still continue to put it on the counter (but we kind of always did this especially in cafe and bar)

Ugh, I had to work customer service during COVID and it was an absolute nightmare! I don't even wanna talk or think about those days XD

@KostasKouvalis In France we still have kept everything from it, the whole glass separating things is it so annoying XD
I hate it too but can't do much about it, not every store still have it thankfully but a lot of kept it for some reasons.
It make me feel as if I'm a gangster trying to rob a banks cause only banks have those kind of glass usually XD

If the cashier has their hand reached out, it's rude because you're ignoring their body language.

Some people think if you put the money on the counter and do not hand it to the cashier, thieves might steal the cashier's tips. To avoid that risk, you hand it directly to the cashier.
