What are the characteristics of a socially awkward guy and how do you know he likes you?

I have a crush on my friend Johnathan. Well I was talking to his friend on how Johnathan is strange and he goes, "You have to understand him. Our intelligence level is average while his is sky rocketing up there. So most people being very intelligent also are socially awkward."

So he complimented me on a beanie I was wearing one night at church, he said, "I like your beanie." than scratches his head and looks around. He stands a mile away from me when speaking. I am always the one who has to approach him first, except one time he actually did once and he shakes my hand as he says good morning. He only answers certain questions on text and he never text me first except one time when I was having a bad time and the next day he asked how I was doing. :D

I confronted him and said your socially awkward aren't you? and he said "yeah I try not to be." than laughs as he looks to the ceiling.

I agree with tundrawolf in the second part; that he seems to be very socially awkward (which I am as well); having bad experiences with girls is something we don't want to encounter again and thus we 'draw' us into our shell, and your best bet is to be the one that's always initiating with him and trying to get to know him.

The anon girl is completely correct in 3-5; and I really prefer to be unnoticed, albeit I don't bite when I'm talked too but I'm so closed off that I hope I don't see the person again because I know that they'll somewhat expect me to initiate the next conversation (which, ironically, is not how girls think when they are flashing their approach signals and when us guys approach them they expect us to initiate the next three thousand conversations - that's idiotic)

And the guy must have thought to himself "Oh, darn man, can't believe I actually complimented her on her beanie" and then his, probably, next thought must have been "Oh man, what do I say now?" ...I'm guessing he didn't say much after that, at least not right away.



Was that the first time he was the one to approach you or not? If not, then he's probably

getting a little nervous that you are always the one to do that (my best friend, from childhood, is and always has been the one to initiate everything with me, and I'm getting a little peed off at myself; I want to change but it's not as easy as it sounds). Answering not all text could mean that he's not much into texting (much like myself, and I'm not a phone person and not even a Facebook chat person; as that is always off the few times I log into).

But I would assume he would be somewhat happy that he now knows that you know he's socially awkward; it's a pressure that has been taken off him. I assume not many people realize it when others are really socially awkward and that's not an easy cross to bear. I'm a student in college and there was a girl in one of the classes that started talking to me

during a break in the class, in the cafeteria as I was getting myself a cup of coffee, and that conversation flowed well and had something to do with coffee. It was a nice and pleasant conversation - and a nice surprise for me - as I'm always silent in classes and sit alone; but now when there are breaks; I try to get out of the classroom before she does because she has to walk by my table everytime and thus get to the cafeteria beforehand, as she's mostly always with her friends from the class (the time she talked to me I think she was alone), and thus when she's walking towards the cafeteria and me away from it I somehow feel better just nodding my head, as I seem to think that it's socially acceptable to just acknowledge someone who has spoken to you, but not to talk to them again if a friend of theirs is

present. Hopefully I make a little bit of sense ...even though most of my actions don't.

And yeah, I'm John and I'm an alcoh... oh wait, sorry, wrong post; I'm a social retard

Wow I really love your answer! :D It sounds like him a 100 percent! He didn't say anything at all after the beanie and said he had to go home. I talk to him about science because I want him to be un-comfortable talking to me. That's why when he came up to me first and shook my hand as he said good morning...I was so proud and very excited! I research stuff so I can actually know what I am talking about when it comes to some stuff in physics! I am shy person so understand him a bit!

Come at him with a complex problem, be it mathematical, theoretical, or whatever. Take interest in it, and his attempt to find the answer. He will not easily forget your desire to find the solution.

Yes, he is extremely socially awkward. You must use all of your feminine charms on him, and keep on, even if he shows disinterest. He is interested in you, but he does not know how to handle it.

Thanks! :) Yeah I think he has trust issues also. He has dated a lot of bitches in the past. HE is a physics major, he wants to be a scientist at NASA. He loves astronomy!

For me the characteristics of socially awkward guy are:

1. When talking, his body language shows that he's uncomfortable

2. They never make a joke

3. Most of the time they just keep quiet

4. Are more comfortable when unnoticed

5. Has few friends

I think it's obvious that he likes you. Because it's obvious he's socially awkward yet he tried to make an effort not to. My point is he tried to get out of his comfort zone. No one would want to do that accept they like you :)

This was the worst thing you could say to someone with social anxiety and awkwardness. You probably made him feel extremely insecure and also quite possibly avoidant after a comment like that. Socially awkward people tend to be very sensitive and are insulted quite easily.

hes waiting for you to make a move, so what are you waiting for? guys are not going to do everything and confronting him about his awkward flaws is kinda mean from my point a view
