My boyfriend still follows his ex girlfriend on instagram?

Is there a reason why a guy would stay following an ex on social media?
He's not super active on instagram, so if he just never unfollowed, id get that.
I dont wanna come off a rude or invasive to him if I ask, but is it normal for a guy to still follow their ex girl friend on social networks?
He says he's over her and how much he dislikes her, but is it just to see how life is now for her, like just to keep up, i guess?
