He called me pretty. Why, though?

I've been talking to this guy for a while now. He's in a lot of my classes and we usually sit right next to each other. He looks at me a lot during classes. I got his number a couple of weeks ago, and I trended him on FB this week.

He started messaging me this week and we've talked on and off all day long for the past 2 days. We were already sort of close at school, but he's really begun to one up to me. I opened up to him about a few things and then asked him what his first impression of me was. I asked because I wanted to know if he thought differently of me now that he's gotten to know me better. He told me that he thought I was really nice, funny, and pretty.

Why did he say that?

I'm only asking because he just doesn't seem like the type of guy to say those things. I wasn't even asking or thinking that he was going to compliment me. It completely took me by surprise hen he said that. I can't tell if he was flirting or just being nice.

He also constantly tells me I'm sweet and smart. One of our friends even told us to "just date already." When he said that, I said I had a bf (which I did at the time) and he said that he didn't want to date at the moment. Why didn't he just outright say he wasn't interested in me?

Ok this guy might be trying to get into your pants since his actions and time frame seem to indicate he wants you for your body. Conversely he could have had a crush or some level of attraction to you before and didn't have the nerve to go with it. Do you know if he has had any other romantic partner or if he even swings that way? You are leaving us with very little information to work with here.

No. Trust me, he is NOT trying to get in my pants. We both are dealing with a lot of issues. Like we are both seriously fucked up from being mentally ill. It took me a while to vent get his friendship because he has a hard time opening up to people. When we first started chatting he would barely tell me things. I told him I'd be his friend and that I'd be there for him. I think he was scared that I'd ditch him or something, but now he realizes I won't. I know it may sound like I'm just defending him, but trust me. You can eliminate the factor of him just wanting to get in my pants.

I'm a junior in HS and he's a freshman. I don't exactly know if he swings my way, but I don't think he's gay. If anything he might be bi. I do think, though, that he is attracted to girls.

Ok first this would have been useful beforehand and second given the situation then yes I do think he is trying to start a relationship with you, a deeper one. Or he's just really happy that you stayed true to his friendship and is expressing it in ways you did not expect. Wait for more people to chime in and don't just take my word for it.

Yeah, sorry about that. I know people on GaG don't really enjoy long question descriptions so I try to minimize the details as much as possible which also makes me sometimes forget the really important ones. I'm also his only real friend at school since no one else has really taken the chance to get to know him.

He is definitely flirting. That doesn't mean that he *like* you however. I compliment girls just because i know it make them feel good.

If you like him back, give him some more signal. If he escalate, then it a sure-sign that he like you. If he don't , then he were just being nice/flirty.

Thanks. I mean, we kind of have this flirty relationship going on already, but he was just so forward with saying I was pretty and it really surprised me because when I got to school, most times I look like shut. All I wear is sweats, no makeup and my hair pulled back in a bun.

Ehh, not so much. I really can't tell. I know he's on the autism spectrum. I'm just scared that I may be misinterpreting his actions since I know that people with this illness have social problems. He doesn't really talk to many people besides me. Just today he told me he cares about me to which I replied the same thing, but about him. I just can't tell if he just sees me as a really good friend or if he sees me as more. I doubt he wants to pursue anything with me because we are both pretty unstable at the moment, so I'm not looking to date him. I'm just really confused.
