Why would a guy put himself down constantly when in the company of the girl he really likes?

In conversation he will say negative things about his personality. Is he looking for a compliment? It's not occasional but regularly. Last time I saw him we had a great time but he was so agitated with me but we got on really well. Her calls me darlin' and really bigs me up. He seemed so goofy too and talking fast kinda like bippo the clown! I don't understand why he constantly says nice things to me but puts himself down. If he really likes me why put himself down?

maybe he has self esteem issues and he really needs/wants someone to make him feel better. I've had guys who were into me put themselves down a lot, and I would always have to say, no that's not true, you're making a big deal out of this, etc.etc.

they're afraid you think as they do, and want you not to. they feel inferior. :(

either way, most likely low self esteem so he figures hyping himself up/trying to impress the girl won't work because she probably sees what he sees, so he brings attention to it instead so by talking about it, together they can make it into not such a big deal? ok my explaining still sucks

but friends do that too, not just guys with girls they like

Because he wants the girl to protest and tell him that he's not _______. I'd venture to say girls do it more than guys.
