Just when a girl starts to fall for a guy, why would he suddenly pull back?

Likely he either realized something he had missed earlier and didn't like or he was sniffing around more than one possible target and decided on the other one. Probably should look at that as a blessing as not causing a real disappointment down the road with this guy.

Sometimes you need to give them enough space to miss you. I wouldn't be calling him a lot, or texting him everyday for every little thing that happens. Especially if he is shy, or of a different type of personality.

He didn't feel there was sufficient reciprocation from her. Maybe someone else came in to the scene for him that was more appealing (or a combination of both of these).

He found out something about her that he didn't like.

I can imagine it being frustrating not being the chosen one and only, but it does mean that in your head he does not have you as his priority so use that knowledge on how to act next. Whether stick it out or look elsewhere, there are bound to be others more willing to be settled down like you seem to seek.

It's not nice knowing that and the feelings it must create. I can relate but it's one of life's bumps that hinder us from being happy but when things take a turn from this it will be a time for positivity to blossom.

Some guys lack confidence that they can keep up a long-term relationship, like they think they're partner will get bored with them sooner or later.

You can really like them but then think, "oh no, I can see how this will play out, she'll lose interest in me and it will hurt". So guys think they're cutting their losses because they don't have enough confidence in themselves to make a relationship they really care about last (and the more a guy cares, the more it hurts if things petter out).
