Why did he request to follow me on Instagram?

I liked this guy for like 2 years but I never talked to him and anytime he would look at me I would look away because I was so nervous. He was always staring at me too. Then a while ago I heard from this guy friend of mine that he was going around boasting about how I like him and always stare at him. So I didn't look at him again for like 2 months. My friend said he would always stare at me with a sad look after that and tried passively getting my attention. I figured I would try to make peace with him, so I requested to follow him on Instagram. He ignored it for a month then rejected it. Now 2 months later, still whenever I walk in the room he leaves, and deliberately avoids acknowledging I exist. Last week I got a notification that said he requested to follow me 3 minutes ago, but when I went onto Instagram, the request was gone. I don't understand why he would be on my profile to accidentally request.
Why did he request to follow me on Instagram?
