Girls: Are black guys more masculine that white guys? If so, why?

Do you girls see black guys as more masculine than white guys? If so, why is this? I'm wondering about this, because of responses I've read on questions on this site, and because of things I've heard about the gangster type and bad boys.

lol. love all the racist generalizations in these answers. white people crack me up sometimes. "im not a racist but...(insert blatantly racist generalization or stereotypical comment here.)"

tHis entire question has no real answer. you may like what one person says vs. another person due to any racial or cultural bias you may have, but that still doesn't change the fact that "masculinity" doesn't exist in nature. its a concept, an illusion that has no real foundation, that we have created throughout history in different cultures and countries. to split it up even further, people within the same culture can have different ideas of what is "really" masculine or feminine. its all just ideas. so no one can actually say for a fact that black guys are more masculine than white or vice versa. you have your opinion and that's all. I find it hilarious and pathetic so many people saying "oh ____ guys aren't masculine, they're just filled with quality a, b, and c." well according to the next person, qualities a, b, and c are the very things that make a man "masculine." its subjective.

Personally, I don't indulge much in gender roles so I don't think guys have to be masculine (according to the definitions our society has of what masculine is). I think the white media has pretty much portrayed black men and women, the race as a whole, to be the most "masculine." this was essential in the old days for deeming white women to be superior in terms of femininity and probably for black men as well so they could paint the picture the brutish, ignorant, all muscle and no brains animal who was fit for the slave work white men wanted them to do. Even the image of the overly masculine, dangerous, black man trying to rape or overtake the white woman (epitome of femininity) go way back and these are ideas and images that have pretty much become integral to our culture as americans whether we want to face that or not.

there are definitely cultural differences between some black and white cultures. A.a. culture (+ latino cultures) is stereotyped for bravado and being very macho in a way. At one point it was a way to get back at the white man for centuries of emasculation (we all see that in blacksploitation films and such). now its mainstream rap/hip hop industry. it plays a very significant role in defining what a black man is (and its controlled by white men ironically) and has a strong effect on the many many fatherless homes esp. in poorer black communities. its like any other trend that takes hold on a group and convinces them to behave a certain way. except it has a much more serious effect on the black community.

i think there are different ways of looking at men without having to put all my faith in some fluctuating idea of masculinity. I don't think "i want a masculine guy" when I'm checking someone out or dating someone. I think I want more specific traits like compassion, honesty, sensitivity, confidence (sans the cockiness), hotness (my idea)etc.

anyway, I disagree with Simple-Simonette. black men are no more arrogant than white guys. arrogant is arrogant. there's a fine line between confidence and conceit and I think that once you've crossed it, you've crossed it, regardless of race.

masculinity has nothing to do with race, in my opinion. boris kodjoe is sexier than robert pattinson, but I'd date justin timberlake over lebron james any day. a man is a man in the way that he carries himself no matter what color, dress style, background, or whatever. if you're respectful, confident within yourself (not saying that being a little self-conscious makes you less of a man, but more so you have a good idea of who you are and you try and better yourself as you move along), and ambitious, you're masculine. it's not about aggression and the stereotypical notions of manliness.

idk why there's such a huge debate over how race effects masculinity/femininity. it always dwindles down to the individual.

If we are talking extremes, I've found that between a confident black man and a confident white man - the black man tends to be more arrogant.

Don't get me wrong, I've met my share of arrogant white men - but the black men I've encountered were much more aggressive than the white guys.

Do I consider arrogance and aggressiveness more masculine? Not necessarily. Sometimes I felt the arrogance was just a cover up for deep insecurities. I almost felt they were afraid to show anything besides their cockiness. I know it's contradictory - but extreme macho behavior reminds me of the bravado of children. A real man isn't afraid to be comfortable being himself. Masculinity is more about presence than show.

As a black guy that is regularly on this site & stumbled upon this ?, I f feel because of my 1st-person perspective, that I HAVE to answer this ?.

A few points:

1) It's been scientifically proven that men of African decent (includes the Middle Eastern region) have the highest average levels of testosterone.

2) In the US during slavery, the strongest black men & women were "bred" like animals to make the strongest offspring possible (aka "super slaves"). Doing this for centuries, you have a population of black people that, due to being bred for strength, are naturally strong, & now, seem to dominate every US sport. (funny but true)

Naturally high testosterone + bred for centuries to be strong = uber-masculine black guys

I'm not saying that every black guy in the US is overly promiscuous, over-aggressive, extremely strong, & has anger management problems. All that I'm saying is...black men, on average, are more inclinced to have elevated testosterone due to my 2 points stated above, than other races of man.

This is where every stereotype about black men originates.

I hate the stereotype of black men being masculine, sporty, muscly, 'gangster' bad boys! It's true, black people in general do have a more muscular physique, but that doesn't have to entail masculinity. I mean has it not occurred to anyone that the whole of a race can't have the same personality?

There are quiet black boys, funny black boys, clever black boys, sensitive black boys, attractive black boys, ugly black boys, sweet black boys, friendly black boys, nerdy black boys, stylish black boys, punk black boys, emo black boys, goth black boys, skater black boys, lady gaga fan black boys, black boys that love wearing pink, black boys that like going to the library, rich black boys, i-love-candy black boys..

I'm not going to be able to list the infinite personalities and body types that black boys can have, because there isn't time or space, and frankly its just stupid. I would say though, that ethnic minorities often get stereotyped in the media, because we are a minority: its easy to think we're all the same. I'm sorry, but we're not.

There are three extreme flavors here... White Men, Asian Men, and Black Men.

Asian men are very oftentimes timid and seem to lack confidence with respect to sex-related stuff (relationships, cool pick-up lines, etc.). They have great confidence when it comes to little things like career, success, earning money, etc.

Black men are aggressive, but are not confident (at least when it comes to anything other than putting on a "cool pose"). Plus, they tend not to be very well educated, which doesn't help. Oh yeah, the slavery thing in the past probably doesn't help their confidence either. But, hey, hip hop is cool isn't it?

White men are, I believe, right in the middle of these two extremes.

I know I'm generalizing, but deep down in your heart you know I'm right.

Being a black guy, from how I see it, I can say that I think people in general expects the "average black guy" to be a bit more masculine than the "average white guy". There are different reasons for this. Stereotypes, past experience, researching and ect has told us that black men are capable of being "more" mentally, sexually and physically, wheather that means a bit more emotions, on being a bit more taller or having a more bigger "package"...

Of course, this is not the case for all black guys. I say on a bigger span that people, know matter who they are, are all different...

Well, hopefully I can say for everybody, a guy with confidence is very manly and attractive. I think it just depends on the guy and there confidence level and also there background. If you think about it however, a lot of black guys grow up in a way where confidence is almost everything. Black guys proving themselves to other guys is something they've been doing at a young age. Because black people (GENERALLY) don't have a problem with speaking there minds and getting in your face. So I think black guys have had more time and situations to not just build up but prove themselves to other guys. So that why the whole thing of 'black men are more masculine' goes around.  But because everyone has there own experience, of course that opinion isn't true.

Generalizing a race into which is more masculine than another would be a stupid generalization to make. And for everything that could be defined as masculine is much too broad, unless of course you're a narrow-minded douche. The only factor I can think of that most people would associate masculinity with is a stronger, less fatty body build. (Muscular builds for the simpleton types)

The only reason why black guys naturally have a lower body fat than any other race is because they endured slavery. What did not kill them made them stronger, literally. If you know anything about science and natural selection you'll know what I'm talking about.

well what I realized about how some black men view masculinity, is that they have to treat women are certain way to be called a MAN. For instance the guys here thinks its crazy that a man doesn't cheat on his girlfriend or wife. I asked one of them why they do it, and he said because he's a man.

So by no means do I think that black guys are more masculine than white guys. They don't really show affection in public, its like the girl has to be all over them.

i don't think so. I am tall, have a deep voice, thick penis, strong brow, thick eyebrows, broad shoulders, I put muscle on really easily, strong jaw, and a hairy chest and I'm white.

i don't think race matters tbh. I've seen manly men in ALL races. I also think that girls can mistake arrogance and bravado for confidence. (think thugs and biker guys)

and a black guy can be masculine without having to be a thug or a gangster. I would actually say that most thugs & gangsters have a false sense of bravado which is not true masculinity anyway. but the average black guy is pretty masculine and carries himself with confidence. same goes for hispanic men.

dont get me wrong...there are some masculine white men, most of them are like the southern country type...but in general I think white men are conditioned to be kind of effeminate.

I'm not sure exactly how different people would define the word, and definitely guys of any race can be masculine.

To me masculinity would be a guy who'd love me and pay more attention to me than anyone else - a guy who would stand up for what's right, and not complain about what's unfair in the world but accept things as they are. A masculine guy would be more protective and take more control over their surroundings.

Do masculine guys attract me more than the not-so masculine guys? Probably, but it's not everything that decides whether I like a guy or not.

I have to mostly agree with an earlier post. I think there's some confusion with the terms "masculine" and "aggressive." There's also a lot of force-fed media images that seem to be swaying a lot of opinions.

I do have to say, though, that statistics and history can't lie. Black men are disproportionately imprisoned, far less educated than whites/asians, have a lower average income than whites/asians, come from and cause single parent families, etc. They are also substantially under-representing in professional careers (doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists).

Given these realities I don't think there's a way to think of black men as being more masculine. These facts are quite the opposite; they are very emasculating.

As a black guy, I'd say definitely not.  You can't lump all people of a race together just because they share the same racial background.  It should all be considered on an individual basis.  I have friends who are latino, white, black and oriental who I'd consider very masculine and from the looks of it, so do their girls...

I think black men are just extremely sexy. I am attracted to black men much more & honestly I also do think it is more common to find a masculine black man then there is a white man. Black men are just naturally built more thicker and muscular than white men. Just like how most black women tend to be very curvy and thick like Beyonce and most white women are very thin like Taylor Momsen.

I think that being a minority and a history of racism and oppression make them appear more confident. Its like they had no choice but to be an outsider all the time. SO over time they just realize that they can't do anything other than be themselves and that its an uphill battle. that makes them appear more manly.

white guys are usually too whiny and think they deserve everything handed to them. they also rarely stand up for themselves.

Actually black men tend to develop more musculature than white males. While "masculinity" is not dependent upon muscles, many people conflate the two to mean more muscles = more masculine.

The theory behind this is that during the days of slavery, only the fittest, most physical powerful could survive the harsh conditions. As a result, the descendants tended to be more physically built.

I believe a man is masculine if he is willing to get his hands dirty & likes to do guy stuff, like play baseball, watch football.  I don't consider one race more masculine than the other.  The men who I don't consider masculine are metrosexual.  It is a turn off for me if a guy wears make-up, dresses like a girl, or spends two hours doing his hair (I mean really, they hardly have any, lol).  And just so you know, we don't all like bad boys.

It actually depends on the girl. What types of guy she likes, some girls maybe into geeks other into badmans. I would say that majority is into badmans but badmans don't have to be black. I'm into one and he's tan with brown hair but still 100% badman. But I would also say the reason might be because girls find badmans and aggressive and that kind attractive.
