Why would a guy block me on Facebook messenger but not completely block me on Facebook? And then send me an email? (Details in description)?

We have no mutual friends in common. We were close at one point but he had ignored me for several months and then unfriended me from facebook. He only blocked me on Facebook messanger. He did not block me from seeing his page or sending him a friend request. He has always been nice to me but then he started ignoring me and unfriended me/blocked me on messanger. I also don't understand why he sent me an email for a holiday last week wishing me a good year and said he hopes I'm doing well because I am blocked from messaging him on Facebook. He did not ask me how I am or any other question. I sent him a generic nice email response. I did not include a question in my email to him either. He did not send a reply to my email. If anyone has any insight into why he blocked me on messenger and sent me an email I would appreciate reading it. I also would like to hear your thoughts on why he did not just fully block me. I ask that because I just feel that its easier to cut someone out of life by blocking 100% instead of partially. I also want to add that I was very annoying on facebook messenger with him and I did comment something on a picture that he deleted shortly before he unfriended me.

He has been sending me emails on holidays for a long time but for like the past year he has not responded to my replies to his emails even when he included the question how are you in his email. So why did he ask me how I am?

Also does it sound like this guy is ever going to be my friend again? I think I should let him make all the moves, is that correct? I know someone is going to say the equivalent of hop off but I did. I haven't spoken to him since over three months ago when he deleted me from Facebook until I responded to his email. What prompted me to ask this question is that I am surprised to have recieved a holiday email from him last week. He hasn't sent me a holiday email for several months before he deleted me from facebook. Also he begins his emails to me by using my name.

Hello I am in similar situation, so I found your post hear. My friend was not happy that I was vaccinated and he was against vaccines, so first he unfriended me on facebook, but after sometime when we talk he accepted me as his friend. But few months ago I posted on my wall that I support the green covid pass and he blocked me on whatsapp and messenger. But whats strange I am still his friend in facebook. I tried to call him but he does not answer. So I guess you did something similar. Just try to remember what happened befor you got blocked. I hope eventually he will come back, he simply needs space. Thats all!

Which part do you think he did by mistake? I would have thought the email was a mistake but he used my first name at the beginning of the email with sounded like a personalized message.
