Guy complimented my backpack?

I realize this is a weird question, but the other day I was standing waiting for the elevator in a public setting and this guy standing nearby is like, "I like your backpack" and smiled at me. There is nothing special about my backpack, it's a 3 year old Oakley that doesn't look amazing (it's never been complimented). I get the feeling he was hitting on me, trying to start a conversation. Any ideas? I'm a guy by the way.

Some people like the look or colours of older backpacks. If he was having a good day and couldn't help but notice the brand or colour, he might be feeling happy and want you to as well. A little compliment goes a long way and maybe he just wanted to brighten someone's day. And that someone was you :)

Maybe he just likes old backpacks. But could have been being nice. Sometimes I randomly compliment people when I think they need it. But he could have also been trying to start a conversation or something like, or he could have been hitting on you, I don't really know

I was asking the question because I have gotten quite a bit of attention from gay guys, so I was wondering if this was another instance. I'm guessing it was because the comment just seemed really out of place, and I haven't seen straight guys complement strangers on their attire, especially old dirty attire haha. And I wish I were gay because I get along with guys well and could hook up with them then, and frankly I don't like women very much with their entitled attitudes (at least that has been my experience).
