It´s always tricky to transition from friends to a relationship. How about you ask him if he wants to hang out sometime and he can choose what you´d do. If he doesn´t want anything more, he´ll say "Okay, we can do that sometime" but if he´s like "Okay do you like doing X, and how about next Sat?" then you´re good. I assume you don´t want to lose him as a friend, so just asking him out will be enough. Then, if you get close (stay right by his side and hold his arm), that´s more than enough as a signal for him to make his move. I think flirting isn´t enough in this case because friends can flirt and not mean anything about it. But if you get serious on a night out and flirt without laughing, that´ll do the trick
