Why would my best guy friend start ghosting me?

So, for three years, I had a guy friend that lived a few countries away (military brats) and we would always keep in contact via email or Skype or text or something similar... well, in the last year he started taking longer and longer to respond—to the point I think it was 4 months before I heard from him again...

I admit that we did admit to having more than friendly feelings for each other at one time, but he had started dating a girl at the time and we agreed that a relationship wouldn’t be right. But... he broke up with her at some point... and amidst everything stopped texting practically altogether... even things like “happy holidays...”

He used to be my best friend but now I don’t even know him... I don’t understand if I did something wrong or what... Does anyone have any thoughts on why he might have stopped or what I can do to fix our friendship?
